Poem: At 2,579 Feet in Marin

The truth broke at the summit;

A new threat rolled in over the horizon.

Gloomy grey filled more than just the view

As my own judgment grew cloudy.

You heard me before, but did you listen?

Between the ancient orange groves

And the sparkling summer fireworks,

I lost you somewhere in the foggy city

Where a cable car rumbled under red neon.

I heard you before, but I did not listen.

The only way forward from the top

Is down the way we came—

Retracing our dusty footsteps

And rehashing every dark mistake.

We’ve been here before, but did we learn?

Not only the purple trees threw shade

As the amber sun succumbed to the storm.

Our sweaty bodies yearned to finish;

The journey over before we began.
